Teachers Development and the Future of Educators in Malaysia
We are pleased to present the proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Japanese Language Education Malaysia (ICJLEM 2025), a landmark event jointly organized by the Malaysian Association of Japanese Language Instructors (MAJLIS) and supported by The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur and The Japan Embassy in Malaysia. Successfully convened, this conference continued its legacy, established in 2003, as an indispensable platform for scholarly exchange and professional collaboration among educators and researchers.
For this year's theme, “Sustainability of Japanese Language Education: Teachers’ Development & The Future of Educators in Malaysia,” the conference focused critical attention on the core of our educational ecosystem: the teacher. ICJLEM 2025 was distinguished by its expanded regional dialogue. The conference was honoured to feature a keynote address entitled “Global Peace Building through Language Diversity: The Japanese Case,” which framed our discussions within the profound social mission of language education. A highlight was the special panel session, “Japanese Language Education by Country – Sustainability and Challenges” which was notably enriched by the perspectives and shared experiences of colleagues from ASEAN nations. This collective discourse provided invaluable, nuanced insights into our common challenges and opportunities.
The conference fostered a dynamic multilingual environment of exchange, with paper presentations delivered in Japanese, English, and Malay. This reflected the diverse and inclusive nature of the field. The research shared encompassed a wide spectrum of topics, including innovative collaborative teaching models, cross-cultural online learning projects, the implementation challenges of digital educational tools, and the integration of artistic and dialogical approaches in the classroom. The studies compiled in this volume capture the breadth and depth of the conference, offering crucial insights into pedagogical approaches, curricular development, and strategies for long-term professional sustainability.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the organizing committee, presenters, and participants for their contributions, which have made ICJLEM 2025 a resounding success. This year’s conference not only celebrates past achievements but also looks ahead, leading the way to a future where humanity and AI work hand in hand to enrich Japanese language education.
